Terms and conditions

International Affairs Watch is an independent observatory documenting armed conflict and security crises. It publishes conflict files, dated chronologies, analysis and visualisations, produced according to the editorial policy we also publish, which forms part of these terms.

Access to the site is free of charge. Using it means accepting these conditions.

You may read, consult, quote and link to everything we publish. We ask that you do so lawfully and without affecting the operation of the service or the rights of third parties.

The following is not permitted: systematic extraction of content or of the database by automated means without prior authorisation; interfering with the site's operation or attempting to reach restricted areas; impersonating team members or presenting your own content as IAW's; or commercial reuse of the content without a written agreement.

What we publish is information of public interest for documentation, research and educational purposes. It does not constitute legal, financial, security or travel advice, and should not be the sole basis for operational decisions.

Figures for casualties, displaced people and material damage are always published with their source and date attributed. Where two solid sources contradict each other, we record both rather than choosing one.

The Conflict Severity Index (CSI) is our own indicator, under development, whose methodology forms part of ongoing postgraduate research. It is published identified as such and should not be treated as a validated measure or as comparable to established indices.

Their reproduction, adaptation, translation, distribution, systematic extraction or commercial reuse, in whole or in part, without prior written authorisation, is prohibited.

The structure, selection and arrangement of the database of conflicts, events and actors constitutes a protected work in its own right, independently of the ownership of the individual data it contains.

Quote short passages in academic, journalistic or educational work, citing the source and linking to the page of origin. Link to any page on the site. Use our material in class, in presentations and in research, with the same attribution.

Our suggested citation format is: International Affairs Watch, title of the piece, date accessed, iawatch.org.

If you are a journalist and want to reproduce a visualisation or a longer passage, write to us: the answer is generally yes, and that way we can send you a high-quality file and confirm that the data is still current.

Signed analysis and commentary belong to their respective authors, who retain their moral and economic rights, and are published on this site under a licence granted to International Affairs Watch.

Opinions expressed in signed pieces are those of their authors and do not commit the observatory's institutional position.

Trademarks, photographs, documents, base maps and third-party datasets appearing on the site belong to their respective owners and are used for informational and citation purposes, with attribution in each case.

If you own material and believe its use here exceeds what is permitted, write to contacto@iawatch.org: we will review the claim and, where warranted, take it down.

«International Affairs Watch» and its logotype are registered as a trademark before the National Institute of Industrial Property of the Argentine Republic, under registration No. 3.678.654, in class 41 of the Nice international classification.

Use of the mark, name or logotype in a way that suggests affiliation, sponsorship or endorsement by the observatory is not permitted without prior written authorisation.

We correct errors brought to our attention and record the change. The correction categories and the procedure are described in our editorial policy.

Any person or organisation mentioned in a publication may request rectification of factual data concerning them. Requests go to contacto@iawatch.org.

The site links to third-party sources and documents as an essential part of its method: a claim without a link is not verifiable. Those sites have their own policies and content, over which we have neither control nor responsibility, and a link does not imply endorsement.

We work to keep the information accurate and current, and we publish the verification status of every sensitive claim. Even so, we do not warrant the absence of errors or the permanent validity of the data.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we accept no liability for damages arising from use of the site or from decisions taken on the basis of the information published.

The site is provided as is. We may modify, suspend or discontinue sections, and carry out maintenance that temporarily interrupts access.

These terms are governed by the laws of the Argentine Republic. For any dispute arising from their interpretation or application, the parties submit to the competent ordinary courts of the Argentine Republic, waiving any other jurisdiction.
