An adaptation of Evan Wright’s book, written after he was embedded with a Marine reconnaissance battalion during the 2003 invasion of Iraq. There is no heroic arc and no villain: there are contradictory orders, rules of engagement that shift depending on who reads them, and civilians in between. It remains the most useful portrait of what an invasion looks like from inside a vehicle.
